Marvel movies are getting a whole lot bloodier. Deadpool, starring Ryan Reynolds, is the first feature film to put the spotlight on The Merc with the Mouth, the man formerly known as Wade Winston Wilson. Yes, we know he was technically in X-Men Origins. No, that doesn’t count.
Deadpool is one of our favorite Marvel superheroes of all time, but he has always been more of cult phenomenon than, say, a Spider-Man or a Captain America. Completely unbound by the traditional rules of fiction, Deadpool is perhaps best known for the fact that he knows he’s a comic book character. He is second-best-known, of course, for the copious amounts of violence strewn throughout his page. Thankfully, the latter is preserved by the Deadpool movie’s R rating.
