Infographic: The Two Timelines of Star Wars

Star Wars has one of the most massive canons of any fictional franchise, and we’re not just talking about the physical size of the galaxy in which it takes place. The sheer volume of stories, from comics and novels to games and movies, is staggering – and it’s only growing. Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens is out tomorrow!

The original expanded universe Star Wars timeline, known as the Legends Timeline, actually covers the entirety of Star Wars history, measured in years before/after the Battle of Yavin (the climax of Episode IV). All of it – even events such as the beginning of life (5 billion BBY) and the formation of the galaxy itself (13 trillion BBY) – is included.
Then, in 2014, the modern timeline was established, which removed everything from the official Star Wars canon except for:
The main series films
The Clone Wars films and other materials
To-be-published materials

To see how the two timelines fit together, we created this infographic. Notice that the Legends side only includes time periods in which stories take place, and doesn’t go all the way back to the beginning of time (it was awkward enough fitting dozens of millenia on one scale, let alone trillions of years).
